Thayer Hut
Thayer Hut is an Alaska Alpine Club backcountry hut in the Delta Range, placed on a shelf above the Castner Glacier where the glacier’s branches meet. It’s a small A-frame hut that sleeps about four people, built for short stays in a remote glacier setting and used as a storm refuge on the Castner Glacier approach.
Use is strictly first-come, first-served with doors unlocked, and there’s no advance reservation system. The hut is maintained by the Alaska Alpine Club and is open to club members; there is also guidance for larger groups: parties of 8 or more must check availability with the club by email. Inside, the facilities are rustic and limited—there’s a Coleman stove, a lantern, and basic cooking and sleeping items (including a plywood floor and dry roof). In winter, plan for crevasse travel hazards and carry the skills and gear to travel safely; during the summer, access can still involve glacier terrain and routefinding.
