Tinongdon - Ugu Trail

Tinongdon - Ugu Trail is the Tinongdan–Ugu (Mt. Ugo) traverse in Itogon, Benguet, working as a long hike built around pine-forested sections, ridgeline walking, and village trails on the Benguet–Nueva Vizcaya side of the Cordillera.

Typical pattern is a traverse where the entry is Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya (often via Pampang), and the exit is Barangay Tinongdan, Itogon, Benguet. Some starting logistics are described as either Kayapa-side or Tinongdan-side start depending on which direction you hike.

Route scale is consistent with a long day to summit and return: sources commonly describe roughly 9–10 hours to reach the summit from the Kayapa jump-off, and the overall traverse is often planned as a two-day effort when you want more margin.

The trail is described as a ridge-and-forest walk that climbs from highland villages through pine slopes and toward an elevation around 2,150–2,200 MASL. Pine covers most of the route feel, with the open sections increasing exposure to sun during the daytime.

On the route, there’s an emphasis on basic services at village checkpoints—waiting sheds and community areas are referenced along the way, with water sources noted at multiple points on the Kayapa side. This makes the long-distance planning less about finding “wild” springs and more about using the established stops.

Operationally, hikers are expected to register and use a local guide with permit/ecological fees when going through the designated trail management process. One local guide fee reference for the Tinongdan side is around ₱700/day with a guide-to-hiker ratio cited as 1 guide to 7 hikers.

Expect exposed sunlight on the pine slopes and the possibility of leech presence in the forested stretches. Clothing and insect management matter because the trail spends much of its time outside open canopy rather than moving through fully shaded woodland.

There’s also a historical/cultural layer tied to Mt. Ugo (Ugu), including an account of a plane crash on the mountain in June 1987 that is commonly referenced in local trail history.
