Tiritiri Matangi Island bunkhouse

Tiritiri Matangi Island bunkhouse is the island’s only accommodation, run by the Department of Conservation on Tiritiri Matangi Island Scientific Reserve near Auckland. The bunkhouse sits near the lighthouse and the Visitor Centre, with use focused on volunteers and students working on the island, so beds are limited. It’s a communal facility with shared living areas and bunk rooms, and it’s set up for backcountry-style stays rather than private rooms.

Bookings are required, and the online system books bunk beds (not a specific bed) with limited public availability; if no space shows for your dates, the bunkhouse is fully booked, and no spaces are kept for walk-in arrivals. The bunkhouse includes gas stove and oven, microwave oven, BBQ, two fridges and a freezer, and dishwashing supplies; you’re expected to bring your own sleeping bag, sheet, and pillowcase (there’s no linen, and there’s no washer or drier—plan on hand washing). Sleeping is in three public-use rooms with 15 bunk beds total (Room 1 Kahu: 4 beds; Room 2 Kokako: 5 beds; Room 3 Tuatara: 6 beds), with two hot showers, two toilets (toilet paper provided), and rainwater drinking water from the tap.

Getting to the bunkhouse is via ferry access to Tiritiri Matangi; there are no ferry services on Mondays or Tuesdays except public holidays, and public passenger ferries typically run Wednesday to Sunday. From the wharf, the walk to the bunkhouse is via either Wharf Road or Wattle Track (about 40 minutes). On non-ferry days, the ranger may not be available for briefings or to move bags, so avoid planning arrivals or departures then.
