Tongariro Northern Circuit
Tongariro Northern Circuit is a Great Walk tramp in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand: a 3–4 day loop around Mount Ngauruhoe covering about 44.36 km (45 km in common references). The route overlaps with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track for part of the circuit, so the best-known volcanic scenery appears even if you’re doing the longer loop.
Most walkers start and finish at Whakapapa Village (with an alternate Great Walk start at Mangatepopo car park in that season). The huts-to-huts structure is simple: Mangatepopo Hut, Oturere Hut, and Waihohonu Hut, with campsites nearby; huts require bookings in the walking season and camping is not allowed within 500 m of the track.
Expect sustained alpine and volcanic terrain, with the circuit’s highest point at Red Crater (1,886 m). Day-to-day walking is typically done over uneven ground and steep sections, including the climb to Red Crater and the steeper descent into the Oturere Valley, where the track threads through varied lava formations.
A signature stretch runs through the volcanic crater-lake country: from Red Crater down to the Emerald Lakes (old explosion pits), with the track continuing onward from there toward Oturere Hut. The lakes’ distinctive colouring is attributed to minerals washed down from the thermal area around Red Crater.
There’s a strong “volcanic heart to beech and stream valleys” mix on the circuit. After leaving Oturere Hut, the route undulates over stream valleys and gravel fields, then passes through a beech-clad valley before reaching Waihohonu Hut on the Waihohonu side of the circuit.
From Waihohonu Hut back to Whakapapa Village, the route follows the Waihohonu stream, gradually climbs to Tama Saddle, and is commonly paired with side trips to Tama Lakes (infilled explosion craters) and the Taranaki Falls area near Whakapapa.
Season and planning matter here because this is an active volcanic hazard zone and an exposed alpine environment: conditions can swing rapidly, and some sections can be closed or have reduced access in certain periods. In the Great Walk season (late October to April in the season windows given), facilities are better and bookings are required; outside that window it’s cold and wet with reduced facilities and it should only be attempted by people with alpine, navigation, and river-crossing skills.
