Trans Canada Trail - Judique Flyer Trail
The Trans Canada Trail – Judique Flyer Trail is a former rail trail section on Cape Breton Island, running as a linear hike from Chisholm’s Brook (Long Point) to Little Judique Harbour. It’s a long-distance option that takes about 3.5 to 4 hours for most walkers and is rated easy.
Expect an easy, multi-use corridor built on an old rail bed: compacted gravel and natural terrain along the way, with ten decked trestles as standout obstacles/landmarks. The surface is generally compacted, which suits hikers who want steady walking without technical footing.
The trail tread shifts as you move along the route: one section is described as moderate and unsurfaced for about the first 4 km, then it becomes topcoated for long stretches. Overall route surface is also described as gravel plus trestles and natural sections.
Coastal scenery is a defining feature along the Judique Flyer portion, with the route hugging the shoreline and passing waterways and a large wetland area. Along the way you’ll encounter pioneer-era history markers like a pioneer cemetery and interpretive panels.
There are several major access points along this section with infrastructure: Baxter’s Cove Look Off is called out for parking, picnic shelters, and interpretive signage, and it also connects to a public beach and wharf. Another listed trailhead access is Michaels Landing (with a kiosk/access on Route 19).
Mid-route you reach Walkers Cove (TM 24), where the trail passes St. Michael’s Pioneer Cemetery and interpretive panels. A later stop is Baxter’s Cove Look Off (TM 26), followed by more continuation toward Judique and onward to Little Judique Harbour (TM 40).
This route is intentionally multi-purpose and also supports winter use (including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling), in addition to hiking; dogs are allowed on-leash. The Judique Flyer Trail is open year-round.
