Hiking route

Turtleback Mountain Trail is a moderate long-distance hiking route in the Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area in Moultonborough, New Hampshire, maintained by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. The route is built largely on former carriage roads and climbs with wide, gentle switchbacks rather than steep, rugged grades.

The trail is typically ridden end-to-end at about 5.3 miles, and many hikers use it as a building block for loops within the Castle in the Clouds trail network. It stays within the conserved land managed by LRCT.

For a route-and-stops plan, the trail is commonly paired with the nearby Bald Knob Cutoff to reach the Bald Knob viewpoint, using white blazes on the cutoff to identify the connection when linking to Turtleback Mountain Trail.

Trail marking is primarily yellow along Turtleback Mountain Trail, making it straightforward to keep your intended line when you’re threading the Turtleback portion into a longer loop.

Elevation tops out over 2,000 feet, giving quiet, interior views of the Ossipee Mountains rather than big open lake panoramas as the main reward.

If you’re hiking in the conservation area during times when trail work or seasonal closures occur, expect potential detours affecting linked segments elsewhere in the network; follow posted signs at trailhead kiosks for what’s currently open around Turtleback Mountain Trail and its connections.
