Hiking route

UKK Trail (UKK-reitti / UKK kierros) is Finland’s long-distance hiking route that runs as a named thread across multiple regions, from Koli National Park in North Karelia to Urho Kekkonen National Park in Finnish Lapland. It’s typically walked as separate multi-day sections rather than end-to-end in a single push because the overall route is extremely long (~890 km, with route-choice variation reported around 850–1,000 km).

The route is explicitly described as marked and largely manageable on many legs, but not uniformly: some segments are unmaintained and the original alignment can be disrupted by forestry or other activities, so you may need to switch to alternative ways of progressing on those parts.

Landscape character varies by region. The long walk is routed through taiga-style forested country overall, with a sequence that includes lake country and deep forests, and then shifts toward higher-latitude terrain in Lapland (including fell-birch forests, larger mires, and more open fell landscapes).

Along the UKK Trail you’ll find a mix of shelter types—free wilderness huts, reservable huts (some with sauna access), laavu/lean-to shelters, and established campfire sites. At least some campfire/shelter areas have toilets near them; other shelter points may offer less infrastructure.

Water and camping logistics are a core part of planning. The trail traverses areas where water is generally plentiful, and the overall guidance emphasizes carrying and treating/boiling water if you’re not confident about quality, plus planning resupply carefully because services aren’t evenly distributed along the full route.

Seasonality is mainly summer hiking: the route guidance frames it as a summer trail, with preparation for mosquito pressure in early summer (especially June–July) and for weather that changes across the route’s high latitudes.

Access and permits are generally straightforward for hikers: there are no fees to pay for hiking itself, and no permits are needed unless your chosen line goes through special protection/border-zone type areas. Fire use is treated as landowner-permission-dependent and is mainly expected at maintained campfire sites.
