Hiking route

Upper Big Creek Loop Trail #827.1 is a loop hike in Olympic National Forest that circles Big Creek Basin, staying in mature second-growth forest. The route is managed as a forest trail system loop rather than a point-to-point climb.

Typical loop length lands around 4.2–4.4 miles, with about 850 ft of elevation gain. Expect a moderate workload for a short outing rather than a long backcountry day.

The route is defined by frequent creek crossings and confluences, including crossings over the lower Big Creek Bridge and a bridge across Branch Creek. A side loop branches near the Branch Creek area to reach the confluence of Big and Branch Creeks.

Trail context starts at Big Creek Trailhead at the picnic shelter behind Big Creek Campground. From the shelter, you cross the lower Big Creek Bridge and continue north for roughly 1.7 miles to the Branch Creek bridge area.

From Branch Creek, the Mt. Ellinor Connector Trail #827.2 links the loop toward the Lower Mt. Ellinor trail in about 1.3 miles, offering a natural option to extend the day beyond the loop. Without the connector, the loop continues crossing several creeks and re-enters the campground around 4.0 miles.

Management notes for this specific trail include hiking use and pet leash requirements; bicycles, motorized vehicles, and horses are prohibited on the trail. Potable water is not listed at the site.
