Upper Panemanga Hut
Upper Panemanga Hut is a small, remote backcountry hunters’ shelter in the Ahimanawa Ranges (Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand). It’s set up with a four-bunk sleeping area and is used off the tramping track style of DOC backcountry huts—unserviced and geared toward basic, off-grid living.
For staying overnight, plan for simple cooking and heating without modern comforts: there’s typically a small fire setup and basic off-grid water use (water from nearby sources needs treatment). The hut operates on a non-bookable, first-come-first-served basis, and parties generally rely on the standard DOC hut-user approach—fill in the hut intentions book on arrival, pack out rubbish, and bring what you need for toilets and cooking.
Because this area is tied to hunting use, access can be affected by nearby hunting blocks and leases. If you’re approaching for tramping or hunters’ access, build that into route planning so you can adapt if land-use constraints affect your intended entry route.
