Via Engiadina

Via Engiadina is a long-distance hiking route traversing the Engadin Valley in Switzerland, laid out along the River Inn corridor from Maloja in the Upper Engadine to Zernez in the Lower Engadine (the full route continues onward to Vinadi at the Austrian border).

The route is commonly signed as SwitzerlandMobility route 87 and is treated as a “famous hike” built around multi-day walking stages, with a typical structure of about 12 daily stages for the full through-traverse.

Trail character is a mix of high-altitude footpaths on the sunny, south-facing slopes of the Upper Engadine and easier valley walking as you drop toward the lower valley, so the day-to-day effort shifts between alpine and valley terrain.

Expect classic Engadin village-to-village movement through places like Grevasalvas (the “Heidi village” area) and well-known towns including St. Moritz and Zernez, with itinerary days that also include walking near the Swiss National Park area.

Common planning focus is seasonality: the route is most comfortable in summer into early autumn when the higher paths are generally free of snow, with a best window broadly framed as mid-June through September (and sometimes into October depending on conditions).

As a logistical route, it’s designed for stage hiking where you can base yourself in villages and use public transport for access to trailheads and shorter day options; luggage transport is often offered by self-guided package itineraries.
