Waiau Hut

Waiau Hut is a standard 6-bunk backcountry hut in the St James Conservation Area, run by the Department of Conservation. It sits in a sheltered clearing on the Waiau River and is on the Te Araroa Trail, so it can be busy in summer. It’s designed to handle extra trampers on the Te Araroa. Firewood/fireplace use is supported (a fireplace is available), and the hut includes mattresses and toilets with pit latrine disposal. Drinking water is available but untreated, so plan to treat it before drinking.

Use is straightforward: no standard bookings are required and the bunks are first-come, first-served. To stay, buy a Standard Hut Ticket (in an honesty box at the hut) for each night; Te Araroa Trail walkers should also register and purchase the Te Araroa Trail Pass. Motorised access over Maling Pass is closed during winter, when the track is wet, or during high fire danger. Expect snow in St James Conservation Area over winter.

Access planning is closely tied to the Te Araroa corridor. The hut is on the Waiau Pass Track, connecting Nelson Lakes National Park and St James Conservation Area; a common approach to the hut is via the Waiau River (about 2 hours). The nearest hut and access point listed is Blue Lake Hut (10–12 hours via Lewis Pass – Waiau Pass – Blue Lake Route).
