Wallers Hut
Wallers Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry miners’ hut in the Whakaari Conservation Area (Otago), reached on foot from the Queenstown–Glenorchy road. The hut is a historic corrugated iron and beech-pole shelter that sits on Wallers Creek at about 1,030 m.
Sleeping is basic: DOC lists 4 bunk beds, and use is first come, first served (no bookings required). There are no toilets at the hut, and it’s not a modern comfort stop—plan on outdoor waste management and carrying your own supplies.
Heat and water are the main practical items: DOC describes it as a basic historic hut with a fireplace (wood fire), and there’s a water source nearby. The hut was built in the 1920s and was heavily used during World War II when scheelite demand peaked; it has also been restored by DOC heritage teams.
