Wates-Gibson Hut
Route Details
Wates-Gibson Hut is an Alpine Club of Canada backcountry hut in the Tonquin Valley area, used as a base for summer hiking and climbing. The hut is a log cabin with wood heat (wood provided) and propane lighting; it also provides propane stove/oven facilities and has an outhouse bathroom. It sleeps up to a 26-person maximum capacity.
Access and operating window are seasonal and tied to the Edith Cavell Road and Tonquin Valley: the road is typically open to vehicles from mid-June to October 15, and the hut is in annual winter closure from November 1 to May 15 for caribou conservation. Summer access starts at the Edith Cavell Parking lot via the Astoria River Trail, with a stated maximum approach distance of 19 km and maximum elevation gain of 320 m; hikers should plan for hike-in access rather than a vehicle-ready approach.
