Route Details

Wedgemount Hut is a small emergency shelter at Wedgemount Lake in Garibaldi Park, operated by BC Parks. It’s meant to stay available for public safety and emergencies, not for first-come, first-served overnight use in place of camping.

Amenities are basic: the hut provides shelter/space for emergency warming, and there is a bear cache nearby. No showers are available.

The hut has capacity 8, but overnight stays are governed by the camping areas around the hut and lake. Camping uses designated tent pads: 10 tent pads near the hut and 10 near the lake (20 total).

Camping at Wedgemount Lake requires a backcountry reservation through the BC Parks reservations system year-round, with proof of reservation required while in the park. The hut itself must remain available for emergency situations and is not to be used as first-come, first-served accommodation.

There are no garbage facilities, so pack out what you bring. Bring your own toilet paper: there are pit toilets (the hut area has a year-round pit toilet; the lakeshore toilet is seasonal in summer).

Fees apply year-round for camping and must be paid in full before entering the park. Overnight camping typically involves a backcountry permit; the reservation system provides the applicable per-person-per-night pricing for the camping stay and related transaction/processing items.

Access is via the Wedgemount Lake trail from the trailhead reached off Hwy 99; the route to the hut includes a steep, boulder-strewn section that can be slippery when wet. In winter, the lakeshore outhouse is removed because of avalanche risk, and camping is shifted to the upper campground near the hut with a reroute for the first part of the approach.
