West Fork Cabin is a small backcountry wilderness cabin in the mountains of southwestern Montana, used as a primitive, one-room, hike-in-style base for hunting, hiking, wildlife viewing, and camping. It’s a staffed Forest Service rental facility with year-round use; the cabin is available from July 1 through March 31, with extra winter access depending on conditions and over-snow travel permitted after December 1.

Inside, it sleeps up to three people with a set of bunk beds plus a twin bed. The cabin is heated by a propane stove/lantern and a wood stove, and it includes a table and chairs plus basic cookware, dishes, utensils, and cleaning equipment; there’s also an outhouse with a vault toilet about 30 yards south at the tree line. Guests bring key supplies because the cabin does not have drinking water or electricity, and there’s no fuel provided for the stove or lantern.

Bookings are handled online through Recreation.gov, and stays are limited to six days within a rolling 30-day period. The cabin is locked, and the combination is provided after purchase; it’s closed on Wednesdays for administrative purposes from July through November. The facility has a mandatory food-storage order each year between March 1 and December 1, and guests must pack out all garbage and food, clean the cabin, and replenish the wood in the woodbox before leaving.
