Westlawn Hut (historic)
Westlawn Hut (historic) is a small backcountry hut on Waiouru Army Training Group land at Waiouru Military Camp, accessed via Argo Road. The hut was built around 1900 for the musterers working on Ohinewairua Station and later saw use as a recreational hunting hut from the 1970s. It’s a Category 2 historic place, reflecting early pastoral and military history in the area.
The hut sleeps 4 people (timber bunks). Heating is via an open fire, and water comes from a roof-fed rainwater tank. Use is managed by the New Zealand Defence Force as a private/non-public access site, and it’s generally closed to the general public for recreational hiking.
