Whitewater Trail #207
Whitewater Trail #207 is a long-distance hiking route in the Mogollon Mountains/Gila Wilderness within Gila National Forest, reached from the Glenwood area. The line runs through Whitewater Canyon starting near the Catwalk National Recreation Area, then continues deeper into backcountry terrain.
Distance commonly gets broken into shorter days: the full end-to-end route is described as up to about 14 miles one-way, but many hikers do it as shorter 5–7 mile segments.
Early on, the trail begins with an accessible approach at the Catwalk—paved access and a bridge/catwalk section that puts you over rugged ground before you transition into the deeper canyon hike on Whitewater Trail #207.
Beyond the Catwalk, expect terrain effects from historic flooding: washouts, downed trees, and missing trail sections can show up, so plan for routefinding and the possibility of detours or sketchy footing in places where the tread has been damaged.
Further into the wilderness, the route becomes more rugged and navigation-heavy, especially once you pass major junctions such as the Deloche Trail #179 (and other nearby intersections).
Water and weather hazards are central to planning here: the canyon is prone to dangerous flash flooding, and conditions can change quickly with snowmelt and monsoon activity. Avoiding the trail during monsoon lightning/storm periods is emphasized, and local weather checks matter before committing.
Some portions pass through the 2012 Whitewater-Baldy fire scar, which can increase the risk of falling dead trees during wind or storms.
At the Catwalk Recreation Area, it’s a fee day-use site with picnic tables and restrooms, with the Whitewater Trail #207 extending from about 0.5 miles up the canyon from the parking area via the rebuilt Catwalk access; the trail continues from there for several more miles where it has been cleared. Day use only and no overnight time at the recreation area are typical restrictions for that access point. Bring water—no drinking water is available there.
