Winchcombe Bivouac

Winchcombe Bivouac is a small Department of Conservation backcountry bivouac in the Tararua range area, built in a compact “dog-box” style for short stays. The building is designed for two people and includes two mattresses, with space for one additional sleeping pad; inside there’s a folding table, corner shelves, and hooks, with an uncovered deck out the front.

The bivouac at Winchcombe has a longer history tied to NZ Forest Service deer culling operations and later relocation back to the Winchcombe site. It was returned to the site of earlier bivouacs on 28 April 2021, using the design of the earlier small dogbox-type bivouacs. Use is free, and there’s no fireplace provided.
