Woolshed Creek Hut
Woolshed Creek Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in the Mount Somers area (Hakatere Conservation Park). It sits in tussock country among rocky outcrops beside Woolshed Creek and is used for overnight tramps, with 26 bunk beds available. Water is cold water from a rain-collection tank (untreated).
Inside, you’ll find platform bunks with mattresses, a wood burner with firewood provided, and a long drop toilet a short walk from the hut. Bookings are required; stays are for a bunk bed (not a specific bunk), and there are no spaces kept for people who arrive without a booking. Fees apply, including hut and campsite prices, with backcountry hut passes accepted.
Access is via the Mount Somers Track, reached from Jig Road (about 2–3 hours). The easiest route is the Miners Track; you can also use the Rhyolite Ridge Track for a more challenging loop option. Winter travel can involve snow and ice, so plan with appropriate skills and gear, and expect a wood-burner fire setup to require your own cooking and basic supplies.
