Yellow Hill Trail

Yellow Hill Trail (#1222) is a long, strenuous hike in the Teanaway area of Washington’s Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, routed for single-track hiking and other motorized uses. The climb runs from the Middle Fork Teanaway Road area toward Yellow Hill and is known for steep, exposed ridge-style effort where shade is scarce.

The standard turnaround varies, and elevation gain is commonly reported across a wide range (roughly 1,138 to 3,800+ feet depending on how far you push). Expect a hot burn-area feel after the 2017 Jolly Mountain fire: more open terrain, very limited shade, and a trail that can be somewhat eroded.

Water planning is the main logistical constraint. Spring and early summer hikers should not count on reliable sources beyond a limited option around a stream crossing; for later seasons or longer days, carry enough water to cover your entire outing.

For a day-hike outing, a common route pattern starts from the trailhead off Middle Fork Teanaway Road and follows the trail up toward Yellow Hill, with an intermediate road/trail sequence before steeper segments. After reaching the area near the ridge crest, the route alternates harder climbs with flatter sections as it works toward the open ground near Yellow Hill.

Once you’re in the open areas, the route gives you choices for topping out—either a careful cross-country push near a rocky high spot or a more straightforward line that reaches the north side for views before turning uphill through brush toward the summit area. From the top, the focus is on the Mount Rainier and Stuart-range viewpoints.

The trail is managed for multi-use: it’s explicitly noted as single-track only with ATVs prohibited, but it still sees shared traffic. Plan for loose footing and uneven tread associated with erosion and shared use, and be ready for limited signage, so navigation discipline matters.
