The Lip
The Tuckerman Ravine Trail passes through the Lip, where the slope steepens over a convex rollover toward the ravine floor. Seeing Hermit Lake below does not make this a straightforward descent: snow-covered trail terrain here can require mountaineering equipment and skills.
On March 9, 2024, two people slipped while traveling on foot above the Lip after ascending Left Gully. They fell roughly 600 vertical feet to the ravine floor; one died and the other sustained life-threatening injuries. Rain and subsequent freezing had left firm snow with exposed rock, ice and holes. This was a sliding-fall incident, despite a Low avalanche rating that day.
