Tenmaku-yama Ski Touring (Hokkaido, Japan)
Tenmaku-yama (天幕山, 1052m) is a low-lying but prominent peak in the Kitami mountains, known for its easily accessed, sublime powder snow. With lappable slopes to the west and south of the summit, keen skiers with a day to kill will love a nice-weather day out on Tenmaku-yama. This route, accessing the southern ridge via a steep climb up the ridge's eastern flanks, tries to make the most of the downhill slopes available. In the middle is a gorgeous wander through old-growth trees on a flat ridge. There appears to be ‘many ways to skin the cat’ on this route, when it comes to ascending up the mountain. It appears (on Yamareco.com) that one of the more popular options is to walk slightly down National Highway 274 to join with the southeastern ridge at its terminus near the train tracks. Don’t do this. Crossing train tracks in Japan anywhere other than a level crossing is 100% illegal. The only feasible option for getting across the train tracks on this route is to cross at the level crossing on the snowed in forestry road. This leaves two options for routes. One is to follow the forestry road for just under 1.5km before climbing up to the upper ridge. This appears to be a relatively popular route. The route we took involves less trudging along the forestry road, and rather climbs up the well-anchored but steep eastern flanks of the southeastern ridge, after about 500m on the forestry road, under the high-tension power lines. This allows for a steep tree-run on the way back, and still treats skiers to the gorgeous, mostly flat-land ridge-line walk through the forest along the southeastern ridge. Either way, the important thing to note is to only cross the train tracks at the level crossing. Crossing railway level crossings in winter:Never ski across level crossings in winter in Hokkaido. This is not only because of the obvious trip hazards involved. If metal ski edges happen to touch both rails at the same time, this can, under certain circumstances, cause barrier arms to descend. Always walk across with skis removed, after checking both ways.

Horokanai Takadomari-yama (from Horokanai Pass, Hokkaido, Japan)
Takadomari-yama 鷹泊山 (654m) offer excellent dry powder skiing, with slopes perfect for lapping. Here we overview an alternative northwest approach to the peak starting from Horokanai Pass 幌加内峠. While the Etanbetsu Pass 江丹別峠 approach is flatter, both approaches are similar distances, with the Horokanai Pass route offering some enjoyable downhill skiing on the descent back to the trailhead. Regardless of the approach, the large bowl east of the peak offers a smorgasbord of lappable terrain, with classic cold-and-dry Horokanai powder snow that will not disappoint. As mentioned above, this route is a less-travelled complement to the more common approach to Takadomari-yama from Etanbetsu pass. For frequent visitors to Takadomari-yama, who are visiting solely for lapping the western and northern aspects of the western bowl, the Etanbetsu Pass route will always be the more straight forward option. That said, this Horokanai Pass route allows for a little more downhill fun on the descent. While not particularly steep on the descent back down to Horokanai Pass, there are some playful open areas. The 444m knob part way through the route poses a challenge in route-finding to avoid having to climb it again on the descent, but overall it’s an interesting minor alternative route with some nice forest scenery along the way.

Chitokaniushi-yama Ski Touring (Hokkaido, Japan)
The ski touring route up Chitokaniushi-yama (チトカニウシ山, 1446m) starts high up on the Kitami Pass (北見峠, 857m) in northern Hokkaido. This gives relatively easy access to good snow and amazing views of the surrounding northern Daisetsu mountains. The basic up-and-back route along the southwestern ridge allows some good skiing, but experienced backcountry skiers will enjoy sampling the various faces and bowls from the summit. If conditions are stable, the south-southwest bowl or the steep western face just below the summit are good candidates for laps. On a clear day, you can’t miss Chitokaniushi-yama if anywhere near Kitami Pass. Its rounded summit and thick ridge leading up from Kitami Pass is unmistakable. As such, it’s one of the very popular peaks for backcountry skiers and boarders in the Kitami Pass area. It’s worth noting that from the carpark it’s about 2.5km of only very gently ascending terrain before climbing starts in earnest. In order to make this route more of a ski than a walk, skiers will need to make the most of their time at altitude above 1000m by lapping the steep western face just below the summit, or skiing the south-southwest bowl and drainage (note that both of these options will require very stable snowpack conditions).

Biei-fuji Ski Touring (Hokkaido, Japan)
Biei-fuji 美瑛富士 (1888m) is a conspicuously conical peak north of Tokachi-dake 十勝岳 (2077m) in the southern half of the Daisetsuzan National Park in central Hokkaido. The peak is well in the alpine, meaning it's a fine winter mountaineering objective. The Kara-sawa 涸沢 gully is more sheltered from the frequent winter storms, however. This gorgeous powder pocket, far away from the madding ski touring crowds further south in the range, offers both great views from the ridge and sublime lappable slopes. The approach is longer and more mellow than other objectives in the range, but getting this deep into the Daisetsuzan Range in winter is always worth it.

Shakunage-dake ski tour via Chisenupuri Ski area (Hokkaido, Japan)
Shakunage-dake (シャクナゲ岳, 1074m) is a gorgeous conical peak sitting to the west of the more well known Niseko Range peaks of Iwaonpuri and Chisenupuri. It's more of a commitment to get to the peak, involving a 30 minute skin across the broad col between Shakunage and Chisenupuri. Skiing can be enjoyed on all aspects from the peak, and the broad face down towards Naganuma Pond is also prime skiing terrain. When we visited, Chisenupuri was crawling with skiers, vying for the last remnants of untracked pow, whereas Shakunage and surrounding slopes were largely untouched. On a good day, skiers will often link up both Shakunage and Chisenupuri for a quality day out in the hills. Shakunage is Japanese for Rhododendron. Apparently this peak was named Shakunage-dake (literally Mt. Rhododendron) because there was a colony of rhododendrons on the mountain. Most commonly approached via the public uptrack next to the Hokkaido Backcountry Club’s Chisenupuri ski field, this is a fine fair-weather peak with a couple of good options for downhill skiing in the surrounding area. The route outlined on this page is geared towards bagging the peak, but in stable conditions, the short drop from the ridge next to Venus Hill down to Naganuma Pond is also a great option.

Chisenupuri Southeast Face (Hokkaido, Japan)
Caution: Chisenupuri SE face is a popular backcountry zone, but requires a good knowledge and understanding of the snowpack – it is particularly avalanche-prone. The southeast face of Chisenupuri チセヌプリ (1134m) in the Niseko Range is the powder pocket that just keeps on giving. Often in the lee of prevailing storms, this area is hope to some of the deepest powder in the range. Access is relatively straight forward too, with a snowed-in highway at the base of the face, and relatively safe ridge-line access to the face proper. Being classic avalanche terrain, utmost care is required here though - the face funnels into a moderately constrictive gully. With careful planning, however, this is arguably one of the range's most accessible backcountry powder runs. Caution: Chisenupuri SE face is a popular backcountry zone, but requires a good knowledge and understanding of the snowpack – it is particularly avalanche-prone.

The west face of Niseko Annupuri ニセコアンヌプリ (1308m), away from the madding crowds of the resort on the eastern side, is a popular smorgasbord of backcountry skiing options. This lowlands hot-laps option is good for when the alpine is inaccessible due to high winds. While the western face of Niseko Annupuri tends to bear the brunt of strong NW winds, skiers can expect good stashes of powder in protected areas. All this is accessible with relatively little effort, and a hotspring soak at the tailhead. Views across to Iwaonupuri are also stellar on a good day. The lower reaches of the western face of Niseko Annupuri, just east-northeast of Goshiki Onsen, offer a couple of relatively sheltered, diminutive bowls that can make for a nice morning or day out. The western face of Niseko Annupuri is subject to the full brunt of the prevailing winter NW Siberian monsoon winds, but the wide gullies on this route here hold the snow well. Choose your day based on the day’s wind direction, and you’ll be in for a fun time lapping these easy-access slopes.

Niseko Annupuri Kita-shamen to Goshiki Onsen Loop (Hokkaido, Japan)
As far as solid lift-assisted day-tours go in Hokkaido, there are few that compare to the Niseko Annupuri Kita-shamen ニセコアンヌプリ北斜面 to Goshiki Onsen 五色温泉 loop. With a number of options available to extend the day's adventuring, this loop should appeal to backcountry skiers of all levels. The route starts with a mind-bending 550m vert in the deepest of deep Niseko powder. Next is a picturesque skin along a snowed-in road, surrounded by volcanoes. Then you'll have a natural hotspring soak before another hit of quality powder turns, leading you back to where you started at Annupuri ski area. Did we mention you'll climb no more than 250m on this loop? Kita-shamen means, literally, North Slope (kita 北 north, shamen 斜面 slope). On the initial bootpack up to the Niseko Annupuri summit, you may be forgiven for wondering if you’ll get any fresh tracks at all on this tour. Rest assured, however. The overwhelming majority of punters trudging up to the summit, dragging their resort skis behind them, are huffing and puffing and hoping in vain for their slice of untracked pow down the seething south and eastern aspects from the summit. The remote western and northern aspects of Niseko Annupuri are much more committing, only accessible to those with the means of hiking back out.

Mt. Iwaonupuri Ski Tour (Goshiki Onsen, Hokkaido, Japan)
Mt. Iwaonupuri (イワオヌプリ, 1,116m – also marked as Mt. Io, 硫黄山) – the smaller sister to Niseko’s Mt. Annupuri, sits to the northwest of the bustling ski slopes of Hirafu. It is a long circular drive to get there though, so it is a great way to get away from the madding crowds. Bring a towel, because you’d be mad to miss a soak in the Goshiki Onsen, just a few meters down the road from the carpark. or its ease of access and relative wealth of options, this area around Goshiki Onsen is a popular spot for backcountry skiing. Access by car is a solid 30 to 40 minute drive from Hirafu.
