Grampians Peaks Trail
Grampians Peaks Trail (GPT) is a 164 km, 13-day/12-night long-distance hike through Victoria’s Gariwerd/Grampians National Park, built around rugged sandstone ridgelines and frequent elevation change. The route is laid out for end-to-end north-to-south walking, with a total elevation gain around 8,000 m.
The trail runs as three official sections: Northern Peaks (51 km, about 4 days) from Mt Zero Trailhead to Halls Gap; Central (64 km, about 5 days) from Halls Gap to Yarram campground; and Southern (49 km, about 4 days) from Yarram campground to Dunkeld. Each section includes significant climbs and descents and is commonly graded in the Grade 4 to Grade 5 range for technical difficulty.
Expect a track character dominated by rocky terrain—steps/rock scrambling sections, slabs, and other uneven ground features—especially in the central parts. While some stretches can feel easier, much of the route is rough, with sustained effort needed even on shorter daily distances.
Camping logistics are purpose-built for multi-day travel: the route uses eco-friendly, hike-in campgrounds and includes hiker huts for staying along the trail. Mid-traverse base logistics commonly revolve around Halls Gap as a practical stopping point.
On planning and navigation, the GPT is managed as a bookable multi-day experience with on-trail accommodation; detailed preparation materials and topographic mapping are available via the park’s GPT planning and prepare resources. Service water is available at specific points along the track (tanks are described for trailheads/campgrounds in route planning materials), but you still need to treat water for drinking.
For context, GPT is located roughly 250 km northwest of Melbourne. Grampians Peaks Trail is also described as a challenging Grade 4–5 hike that can be broken into shorter 3-day itineraries or even shorter day-walk chunks when you don’t want the full traverse.
