Kungsleden

Kungsleden (King’s Trail) is Sweden’s flagship long-distance hiking route in Lapland, running from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south over roughly 450–467 km depending on the taken alignments. It’s split into five main sections and is designed for hut-to-hut multi-day trekking across Arctic mountain terrain, with the route passing through four national parks: Abisko, Stora Sjöfallet, Sarek and Pieljekaise.

The route alternates between alpine ground and lower birch-forest country, so the walking character shifts frequently rather than staying in one landscape type. STF operates mountain huts spaced about 10–20 km apart along Kungsleden, giving most hikers a predictable daily rhythm and reliable shelter options.

A common way to plan is around the northern signature stretch from Abisko into the Abisko–Kebnekaise area (often started from Abisko and worked southward). Other established entry/exit points along the line include Vakkotavare, Saltoluokta, Kvikkjokk, Ammarnäs, and Nikkaluokta, which lets you tackle a few stages instead of doing the full traverse.

Expect straightforward logistics for sleeping and basic meals on most of the trail because of the hut network, but plan for the longest hut-light break: between Kvikkjokk and Ammarnäs there are no STF cabins, so that part effectively requires tent-based travel or alternative limited accommodation.

Season planning is critical. The typical main walking season runs from late June through late September, while the hut network follows the summer schedule (open mid/late June into September). Conditions can still turn quickly in the mountains, so the workable window is defined more by snow and operating dates than by calendar optimism.

Kungsleden’s long history is tied to the Swedish Tourist Association (STF), including the route’s early-1900s development and the spread of marked segments and huts over time; today the trail remains one of Sweden’s most visited long routes. It is also used as a winter trail (ski route) following a largely similar corridor, giving the overall itinerary a year-round identity.
