Larapinta Trail Section 4
Larapinta Trail Section 4 is the Standley Chasm to Birthday Waterhole segment. It’s a point-to-point day (or two-day) hike on unpaved path terrain in the West MacDonnell Ranges (Tjoritja). Total mapped walking distance for this section is 16.08 km.
Plan for a hard, rocky outback cross-country feel rather than a simple valley stroll. Expect steep, uneven ground and rough, rocky creek-bed walking that breaks into exposed ridgelines and demanding traverses.
The section’s standout ascent is to Brinkley Bluff, reached via a steep climb. This is the part where the terrain steepens and the route demands solid footing for the climb to the bluff.
After the bluff, the descent is the technical headache: the trail down from Brinkley Bluff is notoriously tricky, with exposed ridgeline travel that becomes hazardous when weather is poor.
As you work toward Birthday Waterhole, the route continues through dry terrain and uneven track—still on path rather than road—until it finishes at Birthday Waterhole.
Season and conditions matter. Strong winds and severe cold can make the exposed riding/walking along the ridges feel genuinely dangerous, so treat Section 4 as a weather-sensitive link between Standley Chasm and Birthday Waterhole.
Camp logistics commonly revolve around the Junction 4/5 Shelter area on this part of the trail, and food security is important because ravens are known for tearing into improperly packed supplies.
