Map of the Earth Trail is our most advanced trail and it is blazed in yellow. Hiking boots and pole are recommended. The trail is 4.8 miles and creates a loop which splits about .25 miles into the trail.

Map of the Earth Trail is a hard, advanced loop hike at the Lorain/Stonycreek Hiking Trails in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. It’s 4.8 miles total and splits about 0.25 miles from the start, so you can stay on the loop in either direction and still return to where you began.

The route is blazed in yellow. Use the blaze to stay oriented through the early split and as the two loop options reconnect later in the circuit.

Expect terrain that benefits from firm, aggressive hiking boots. Hiking poles are strongly helpful on the steep ups and downs that come with the loop’s advanced difficulty.

Plan for enough time and supplies for a 4.8-mile trek: bring water and snacks for the duration rather than counting on the loop to be short enough to run low on energy.

If you want to turn this into a longer outing, the same trail system includes other shorter loops and connecting spur trails that can be combined with Map of the Earth.

Start/finish is at Lorain Borough Veterans Memorial Park, 507/503 Green Valley Street, Johnstown, PA, and the loop returns you to that point after you work through the split and the full circuit.
