Mount Mitchell Trail

Mount Mitchell Trail is a strenuous point-to-point hike that climbs from Black Mountain Campground to Mount Mitchell State Park and reaches the summit at Mount Mitchell. It’s mapped as a long-distance route in the Pisgah National Forest/Mount Mitchell area, with the trail using a standard blue-blaze marking system.

Expect heavy uphill work and a long, single-sitting climb: the trail runs about 5.6 miles one way and gains roughly 3,600–3,700 feet. Plan on ~6 hours one way for a steady pace, and treat the round-trip as a full-day effort (commonly about 11.8 miles total).

The trail starts across from Black Mountain Campground and trends upward through dense hardwood forest with frequent switchbacks and creek crossings. About the mid-trail area at mile 4.0 there’s a large grassy field used for tent camping, which also gives you a defined place to reassess gear, water, and time.

As you gain elevation (above ~4,500 feet), vegetation shifts into red spruce and Fraser fir, filling the air with a “Christmas” scent profile typical of these higher-elevation stands. Near the upper portion, the route overlaps the Mountains-to-Sea Trail for most of its length, so navigation is aided by shared tread/marking in that corridor.

Near the summit, the hike ends at the summit parking area; a short 0.1-mile paved walk leads to the observation tower for the 360-degree view. The route is designated for foot travel only (no horses, no motorized use), and dogs are expected to be kept leashed.

Management notes for planning: the Forest Service trail info describes the trail under Trail Number 190 (TR 190), with surface described as standard/ground trail and current condition notes that vary by segment. The NC State Parks trail table lists it as strenuous hiking only and only accessible from the Asheville side of the Blue Ridge Parkway; there’s no on-site transportation once you’re in the park.
