Old Long Trail

Old Long Trail is a long-distance hiking route in Richmond, Vermont that runs along the former alignment of the historic Long Trail.

It’s an out-and-back hike with a mapped length of 9.8 miles, aimed at hikers who want a shorter Long Trail side route rather than a full thru-hike effort.

Expect steep elevation change—about 3,336 feet of gain total—and a long day; typical hike time runs about 6.5 to 7 hours depending on pace.

The route is described as challenging and can feel remote and rugged because it bypasses the higher ridges of the Long Trail.

Navigation can be tricky in places, especially along powerline sections; plan on using a map or navigation app before and during the hike.

Surface is mapped as dirt along the route, and the route is part of the Green Mountain Club hiking network for the Long Trail system.
