Sentier planétaire
Sentier planétaire is a themed hiking loop in Valberg (Mercantour National Park area) built around a solar-system scale of 1/1,000,000 (1 m = 1 million km). The course starts from the “Sun” in the center of the resort and moves through planet stops up to Neptune.
The route is an intermediate “piste” hike (piste:ref 7) with moderate effort overall, organized on Yellow PR waymarks. Expect roughly 300 m total ascent and descent and a highest point around 2010 m.
Plan on about 3 to 4.5 hours on the standard round trip for a total distance of about 9.6 km. This is a good length for a half-day outing where you can pause for the educational/astronomy stops.
Along the way there are educational and contemplative stops tied to astronomy, with monolithic planet-like land art sculptures placed along the walking route. The trail also passes through shaded undergrowth and red “pélite” rock formations.
Some versions of the itinerary mention taking the “Images en Alpage” variant on the return. If you want to keep it to the theme only, stay on the standard round-trip loop marked Yellow PR.
Practical basics at the start/area include pedestrian-oriented facilities such as parking and public toilets, plus an orientation table and a shaded picnic area.
Optional additions include using the Planetary Trail app or renting a commented audio guide from the Valberg Tourist Office to get information at the planet/astronomy stops.
