Sörmlandsleden

Sörmlandsleden (“Sörmland trail”) is the long-distance hiking system in Södermanland, south of Stockholm, built around a chain of numbered stages and connecting stretches. The route runs for about 1,000 km and is typically used as a multi-day hike, with options to do shorter sections when you don’t want the full long trek.

The trail starts in Björkhagen (Stockholm) and continues south through the Södermanland towns and areas that sit between Stockholm and Nyköping and beyond. Typical stage planning is based on dividing the route into many self-contained days rather than one single back-to-back hike with no breaks.

Expect lowland walking with changing character as the route works through different nature types in Södermanland—wooded sections, lakeside country, and stretches that reach coastal and lakeshore landscapes. One of the core route dynamics is that the long walk alternates between quieter forest ground and open water-adjacent areas.

Navigation is part of the design: the route is marked with orange trail signage (including orange rings around trees and poles/signs with symbols and the letter “S” on an orange background). Wind shelters (vindskydd) and other shelters are placed along the way for overnight stops, alongside places to refill drinking water at points along the system.

The trail passes through a mix of protected areas and cultural landscapes, including nature reserves and historical sites along the route corridor. It is also divided into many sections (over 100), with most sections in the neighborhood of about 10 km per day, making it practical to string together the stage lengths you want.

If you plan to hike multiple days, treat it like a logistics project: pick stage numbers you can link by travel and overnight planning, then build your kit around long-distance walking in Sweden’s wooded lowlands (layers, insect protection, and a system for water collection and refills at the marked points).

Typical season use is all year, so winter planning is feasible if you’re prepared for seasonal ground conditions on long forest and shoreline stages.
