Superior Hiking Trail - Cascade River Loop
Superior Hiking Trail – Cascade River Loop is a loop hike in Cascade River State Park near Lutsen, MN, built around the Cascade River corridor. It’s commonly used as a 7.4–8.5 mile day hike taking about 3–5 hours.
Expect rugged footing and frequent grade changes: the route’s character is shaped by roots, rocks, and steep climbs/descents, with sections that can be slippery when wet.
Route rhythm is tied to the river—multiple spots along the way provide constant Cascade River views and access to Cascade-area waterfall features.
The loop also includes Lookout Mountain on-trail. Use it as the “high point” push of the day for broader panoramas over the surrounding Sawtooth Range and toward Lake Superior.
Most hikers start and finish at Lookout Mountain Trailhead parking in Cascade River State Park, accessed off Voyageur Highway (MN-61). A Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is generally required to park.
Many hikers prefer hiking it clockwise so they take the east side first, then bring the west ridge return later—useful if you want the river-side portion while you’re fresh.
