Trek Merapi via Sapuangin

Trek Merapi via Sapuangin is a long-distance hiking route on the southeastern slopes of Gunung Merapi in Klaten Regency. The route starts in Tegalmulyo (basecamp area at Pajegan, Tegalmulyo, Kemalang) and is about 5.4 km long, taking roughly 10 hours to reach Pasar Bubrah.

The climb is extremely steep for a hiking trail, with gradients reported up to around 80 degrees. It’s also a markedly more extreme alternative to the more common Selo route, and it runs through terrain with deep ravines along the way.

The route is run with fixed staging points: basecamp to Pos 1 is about 1.7 km, Pos 1 to Pos 2 about 0.8 km, Pos 2 to Pos 3 about 1.3 km, and Pos 3 to Pos 4 about 1.1 km (then continuing toward Pasar Bubrah).

Access is tightly controlled because of volcanic risk. When Mount Merapi is at Siaga (Level 3) and for the current volcanic alert situation, hikes to the summit and to Pasar Bubrah are closed to the public indefinitely.

If/when the route reopens, it functions as a special-interest hiking area with very limited daily quotas—about 15–20 people per day—so plan around scheduled capacity rather than casual walk-up access.
