Walami Trail

Walami Trail (also called Walami Historic Trail) is the eastern section of Batongguan Traversing Trail in Yushan National Park. It’s a multi-day hike built around a series of Japanese-era river-valley crossings and suspension bridges, ending at Walami Cabin/campground.

The most-used day section runs from the trailhead up to Shanfeng (Shanfeng) via Shanfong/Shanfeng Police Station and Suspension Bridge No. 1, then continues toward the Shanfeng Waterfall junction and Suspension Bridge No. 2. This front segment is described as having a rather gentle slope between the trailhead, Shanfeng Waterfall, and Jiaxin.

Between trailhead and Jiaxin, the total distance is about 4.5 km and the elevation gain is about 270 m. The section between the Shanfeng Waterfall junction and Jiaxin Police Station/campground is the typical no-frills turnaround zone when you’re not continuing toward Walami Cabin.

Continuing deeper past Jiaxin leads through additional former police stations and more suspension bridges, including Huangma Police Station and Huangma Suspension Bridge No. 1 and No. 2, then on to the Walami Suspension Bridge before reaching Walami Cabin/campground.

For hikers who go all the way to Walami Cabin, the total one-way distance commonly cited for the eastern section is about 13.6 km, with the cabin/campground around 1,070 m elevation. The route passes the Huangma police area and ends at the Walami Cabin/campground complex.

Permits are tied to how far you go: the section up to Jiaxin is described as not requiring entry permits, while the area between about “7 kilometers” and Walami is described as needing entry permits (including for hiking and camping).

Logistically, a commonly used approach is to reach Nan'an Visitor Center, then walk to the Walami Trailhead; the trailhead-to-Jiaxin portion is the backbone of most itineraries, whether you do a short out-and-back or continue toward the cabin.
