Hiking route

Waterloo-517 Trail is a white-blazed out-and-back hike in Byram Township inside Allamuchy Mountain State Park, serving as a primary connector through the park’s northern section.

The route runs across the forested interior of the park with rolling hillsides and ravines, and it includes moderate-to-steep elevation changes—enough to earn it a Difficult rating.

Blazes are white and the trail is single-track in places; the tread is described as ground-surface and it’s listed as multiuse.

Use the western start at Stuyvesant Road (just off Route 517) and head toward the eastern end near Waterloo Village, where it connects with the Sussex Branch Trail.

Along the way, Waterloo-517 Trail links with other park routes, including the Highlands Trail and the Byram Trail, plus a connection to Ditch/Cardiac Trail (noted as more strenuous).

For timing and expectations, plan on a roughly 5.6-mile round trip and bring the right footwear for varied grade as you move between the western road access and the eastern Sussex Branch area.
