Bivacco Colle del Sommeiller

Bivacco Colle del Sommeiller is a 3,009 m high, unmanned mountain hut in the Bardonecchia area, intended for backcountry overnights on the Colle del Sommeiller. Use is free and no reservation is required; the hut is operated on a strict first-come, first-served basis.

Plan to be fully self-sufficient: there’s no running water, electricity, or bedding, so bring your own sleeping bag and supplies. The hut includes a communal dining area and dormitories, and it also features a small museum focused on the Sommeiller Glacier’s history.

Access is typically possible from the Rifugio Scarfiotti by hiking; motorized access routes to the pass have seasonal restrictions. The road from Rochemolles is open from 1 May–30 June and 1 October–30 November (if road-surface conditions allow), while from 1 July–30 September it closes every Tuesday and Thursday; on open days a cash toll of €10 per motorized vehicle is required at the toll station above Rochemolles.
