Hager Mountain Lookout

Hager Mountain Lookout is a U.S. Forest Service fire lookout cabin rental in Oregon’s Fremont-Winema National Forest. Use is seasonal: it’s available for overnight rentals from November 15 to May 15, and it’s closed to public stays May through November when it’s used for active fire detection staffing.

The lookout cabin is a 14' x 14' room that accommodates up to four people. Inside are a bed with mattress, three folding cots, and a propane stove plus a woodstove; firewood is provided. A picnic table sits outside, and there’s a vault toilet near the lookout. There’s no water on-site, so you need to carry drinking water and supplies for cooking and washing, and you must pack out your garbage.

Access is by winter travel methods: plan on hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing from the trail approach, with the final push described as about a 4-mile route in winter. The rental season timing is tied to snow levels, so vehicle access and walking conditions can be uncertain; contact the Silver Lake Ranger District before you go for current conditions/restrictions.

This is a good winter base for snow-focused backcountry travel and night-sky time. Popular activities listed for the site area include hiking, stargazing, wildlife viewing, snowshoeing, and skiing; it can also be a strenuous climb depending on snow cover and navigation conditions.
