Hapuatuna Hunters Hut
Hapuatuna Hunters Hut is a basic six-bunk backcountry hut in Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island/Rakiura, managed by the Rakiura Hunter Camp Trust for hunters using the surrounding hunting blocks. It’s for booking-based stays, with very limited on-site facilities: multi-fuel burners (take your own dry firewood), mattresses, and simple spaces with an inside/outside meat safe, plus a toilet and an axe or saw, broom, and dust pan.
Water at the hut is untreated and needs boiling before use. Bookings are required and are handled through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre; the hut is also described as having no DOC track access, so you’ll need to plan and navigate your own route. Fees are $30 per person for stays up to 10 days (for example, $30 for 1 night through to $30 for 9 nights).
