Homestake Yurt

Homestake Yurt is a wilderness yurt operated by HomestakeLodge on 530 Upper Rader Creek Rd in Whitehall, Montana. It sits about 1 km from the lodge in a meadow next to the trail, and is set up for backcountry-style stays with a wood stove and propane cooking gear.

The yurt sleeps 6 total (2 bunk beds and 1 futon). Kitchen basics include pots, pans, and dinnerware, with water supplied as 5 gallons feeding a kitchen sink that uses a gray-water bucket. Heat is provided by a wood stove with wood supply and a propane cook stove and grill (you must bring your own small green Coleman propane tank).

Camping-to-yurt essentials are outdoorsy rather than cabin-level: there’s an outdoor vault toilet with TP near the yurt and lighting via battery lanterns (bring 6 D-cell batteries if needed), plus an outdoor deck with chairs and a grill.

Access is different by season. In winter it’s reached by about a 30-minute ski or snowshoe trip from the lodge (no driving, and no walking on the trails in regular footwear). In summer you can either walk (about 15 minutes) or drive to the yurt.

For reservations, you can book the Homestake Yurt directly through the Homestake Lodge yurt page or reservation portal, and contact the hosts by phone at 406-284-1725. Rates typically start around $201/night, and there’s a $30/dog/stay cleaning fee if you bring pets; reservations canceled within 45 days of stay don’t get refunded. Guests must bring a warm sleeping bag, headlamps, the required propane tank for cooking/grilling, and D-cell batteries; trail passes aren’t included in the nightly fee.
