Mckeever Cabin

McKeever Cabin is a remote, rustic backcountry cabin in Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, about 14 miles south of Munising. The cabin overlooks McKeever Lake and is designed for walk-in access, with a short 1,000-foot hike from the snow-free parking area and a longer 1-mile snowshoe/ski approach when roads aren’t plowed in winter.

Inside there are two sets of bunk beds, a wood-burning stove, and a table with stools/countertop for basic meals. Electricity and modern bathroom facilities aren’t provided; use a vault toilet near the trail and a hand pump for drinking water located down toward the lake. Firewood is supplied at the cabin.

Capacity is up to 4 people comfortably and as many as 6 people at maximum. The cabin is accessed with a combination code, and check-in is 2 p.m. with check-out at 12 p.m.; electricity is not provided so plan to bring all your own supplies (including a camp stove, dishes/cooking utensils, lanterns/flashlights, bedding, and toilet paper).

Recreation around McKeever Lake includes fishing, swimming (seasonal), boating/canoeing/kayaking, plus hiking and mountain biking on nearby trails; winter visitors can use cross-country skiing/snowshoe access through the cabin-area trails. For the rental itself, reservations are made through Recreation.gov; the listed nightly rate is about $45, with a Recreation.gov reservation transaction fee added.
