Motorimu Shelter

Motorimu Shelter is a backcountry hut on the Te Araroa Trail near Palmerston North, New Zealand, built for walkers moving through Burtton's Track and the Te Araroa route. It’s a small, free, walk-in shelter used for short overnight stays when weather turns in the Tararua Range area.

Inside, expect a basic sleeping shelter with an outdoor long-drop toilet and an official hut book for logging your passage. It’s set up for simple shelter needs rather than comfort upgrades—there’s no running water and no heating—so plan to carry everything you’ll need for the night and record your stay in the logbook.

There’s no booking process; use is typically first-come, first-served while you’re on the track, and standard backcountry etiquette applies (pack out rubbish, be respectful of other trampers, and sign the hut log).
