Motuora Island bach
Motuora Island bach is a Department of Conservation island “bach” on pest-free Motuora Island, Auckland, used as an overnight wilderness-style base. The small basic cottage is about 50 metres from the beach and sits in the campground at Home Bay on the island’s western side.
It sleeps 7 (with 1 single bunk, 1 double/single bunk, and 1 sofa bed). The bach includes a basic kitchen with pots, pans, crockery and cutlery, plus a small oven and a 2-burner gas cooker, a fridge/freezer, limited solar power, a hot shower, and a flush toilet.
Bookings are required, and a key is provided via a lock box by the ranger’s office door; the access code is sent in the booking confirmation email and you return the key at the end of your stay. Smoking is not permitted anywhere except on the beach and in the campsite.
Stays use island biosecurity procedures: all visitors staying on the island must complete and bring the biosecurity checklist and check/clean/secure gear so you don’t bring pests, soil, and seeds. The island is used for walking, all water sports, and bird watching, and it’s possible to hear—and sometimes see at night—a North Island brown kiwi.
