Refugio Carrel

Refugio Carrel (Capanna Carrel) is a high-alpine bivouac hut on the Matterhorn’s Italian Lion Ridge, used as a stop between the normal ascent from Breuil-Cervinia and the summit day. It sits at 3,829–3,830 m and serves as a compact shelter for alpinists tackling the Cresta del Leone line.

Booking is required for overnight stays, and the hut is currently under renovation (so opening dates can change). The hut operates in a self-sufficient way and is unstaffed; it also has capacity limits and is regulated to prevent overcrowding on the route.

The Italian-side approach is an alpine itinerary where mountaineering experience matters; the hut is reached on a line with technical difficulties before you even arrive. Before you go, plan roped progression if you’re working within a team/skill level that needs it, and be prepared to take your rubbish down—rules of conduct include keeping the room tidy, waiting for guide/bed assignment, and not sleeping with boots on.
