Rostrum Cabin
Route Details
Rostrum Cabin is a small satellite cabin operated by Icefall Lodge, set on a rock rib between treeline meadows. It was completed in the summer of 2020 and is used year-round: in summer as a quick base for glacier access near the Icefall Traverse network, and in winter as extra variety for groups staying at Icefall Lodge.
The cabin sleeps up to 12 people and includes a comfortable living room with a woodstove and a dining area. It has a propane stove, propane heater, and solar lighting; blankets are provided, but you need to bring sleeping bag liners. Hut shoes and rubber boots are available for guests.
Staying here requires a reservation, and the cabin charges a fee.
In summer, the Tempest trail reaches the blue ice of the glacier in about 40 minutes from the cabin. There is also a 9 km hiking trail between Icefall and Rostrum that can be linked with Kirwan Hut for a three- or four-night hut-to-hut hiking trip.
In winter, Rostrum Cabin is used to expand the terrain for the week; in bad weather it has an entirely separate tree-skiing area from the lodge and can be reached from Icefall Lodge in almost any conditions. In spring, it can serve as a base for the early start needed for a ski ascent of Icefall Peak.
