Scotts Hut

Scotts Hut is a historic wintering hut tied to Commander Robert Falcon Scott’s Antarctic expeditions. The hut is associated with Scott’s National Antarctic (Discovery) Expedition (1901–1904) and later served as an important staging post for subsequent heroic-era expeditions, with annual conservation work carried out by a dedicated team.

The hut is a framed and panelled structure prefabricated in Sydney (made from Douglas fir and Scots pine). It was designed to include an open verandah around three sides, but it proved too hard to heat, so the crew mostly lived and worked aboard their ship while using the hut for storage and shelter plus scientific observations, drying equipment, repairs, and entertainment.
