Jailhouse

Route description

Jailhouse, also called Jailhouse Chute, is a cleared ski line through the forest on Big Jay. The opening is associated with illegal tree cutting in 2007, rather than the development of a sanctioned ski trail. The Green Mountain Club documented the resulting scar on Big Jay’s eastern flank and continued monitoring for further cutting in its Winter 2017 Long Trail News.

Access has a conservation history: an August 2008 management statement called for skiers to stay off the scar so vegetation could recover. Respect restoration barriers and closure signs; the presence of a mapped line does not establish permission to ski it.
