Big Jay
This chapter groups the Big Jay and Little Jay ascents and descents reached from Route 242. Big Jay is linked to Jay Peak by an informal ridge path through dense spruce-fir forest; the Green Mountain Club describes this as a route formed by use, rather than a designated trail.
A descent from the resort into this backcountry is not a return run to the lifts. Plan your road exit and transport before leaving the ski area. Jay Peak’s boundary policy states that terrain beyond the boundary is neither maintained nor patrolled by the resort.

Backcountry descentJailhouse
Backcountry descentJailhouse, also called Jailhouse Chute, is a cleared ski line through the forest on Big Jay. The opening is associated with illegal tree cutting in 2007, rather than the development of a sanctioned ski trail. The Green Mountain Club documented the resulting scar on Big Jay’s eastern flank and continued monitoring for further cutting in its Winter 2017 Long Trail News.
