Gilpin
Gilpin’s forested touring terrain is reached from Jay Pass on Vermont Route 242, where the Long Trail climbs toward the mountain’s ridge. This chapter brings together the road access, main ascent, Gilpin #1 and East face descents, and ski-out. The Catamount Trail joins the Long Trail just below the pass’s trailhead parking area.
Navigation on the upper mountain needs attention when the trees are snow-covered. A January 18, 2025 ski-tour report describes snow concealing the Long Trail’s white blazes along the ridge. Use your mapped position to keep track of the ascent and your chosen descent rather than relying on visible paint or an existing ski track.
