Harrison Hut Trail and Approach 2

The road sections were drawn based on satellite images in Google Earth. The trail sections were drawn based on GPS tracks.

waypoint

Julian Harrison Hut

Unlocked hut maintained by the Varsity Outdoor Club. Outhouse nearby.

waypoint

Possible car camping spot

Possible car camping spot. Apparently used by VOCers many years ago for camping. Dubious conditions

waypoint

Good car camping spot

Used in May 2024. Well-drained tent sites. Water sources not great.

waypoint

Good car camping spot

Used in November 2024. This area floods during heavy rain; choose tent spots carefully. Get water from the creek under the 24 km bridge.

waypoint

Campsite

Water source nearby. No outhouse. Practice bear safety.

waypoint

Explore possible trail junction

This may or may not be a trail junction between three branches: * Branch going north to the road * Branch going southwest to the hut * Branch going east to the road that's further away I'm not quite sure if the third branch exists. If it does exist, we should explore it and decide whether that branch should be restored. In that case we should also install a sign here in the future to mark the junction and describe what the three branches are.

waypoint

Put signs or markers at road junction

Ideally, we'd put a sign to mark the direction to the hut, but there aren't any good trees to attach a sign to. Maybe we could attach a sign to a stump, or on a small post...? Maybe we should just put a trail marker at the beginning of the spur towards the parking...?

waypoint

Capricorn Creek Lookout

View of Meager Slide.

waypoint

Creek Crossing

The trail crosses Zygo Creek here. It is usually possible to get across with some rock-hopping. Be careful in the snow. Snow bridges can break and it is easy to slide off into the creek.

waypoint

Reroute trail lower over log?

There is a fallen log across the cutblock further down from the current trail. We could reroute the trail to go over the log, bypassing the tricky rocky bit.

waypoint

Improve junction marking

This is a trail junction. We could (1) add a sign or (2) destroy the flagging on the route to the northwest, if that route will never be used again, so people don't get confused.

waypoint

Reroute trail over log

There is a log just downhill of the current path. It may be better to reroute the trail over the log to avoid the really wet area.

waypoint

Add trail marker(s) here

To help avoid confusion at the junction, we should very prominently mark the main route in both directions from the junction. We don't want anyone to accidentally wander off the wrong way.

waypoint

Campsite

Water source nearby. No outhouse. Practice bear safety.

waypoint

Creek Crossing

The trail crosses Pika Creek here. The crossing may be impassable when the water is high. Do not linger in the creekbed because there is landslide/rockfall danger there. This is not the place to have lunch!

waypoint

Viewpoint #1

Nice view over the valley. Good lunch spot.

waypoint

Viewpoint #2

At Roland's Rock Crevasse.
