Ben Lomond Track

Ben Lomond Track is a demanding day hike in the Queenstown area, climbing from the Skyline Gondola base on Brecon Street up toward Ben Lomond’s summit (1,748 m). The route is managed as a full-day tramp with 1,438 m of elevation gain, so treat it as a serious alpine outing rather than a short walk.

For most parties, the itinerary is a return trip on the same marked route: 11–14 km total depending on which access you use, with common turnaround options at Ben Lomond Saddle and at the summit. Typical return time is 6–8 hours from Queenstown to the summit at a high effort level.

The early climb stays among Douglas fir before you leave the tree line around about 800 m altitude and transition into alpine tussocks and shrubs. Above the saddle, the walking becomes steeper and rougher, and the track crosses private land near Ben Lomond Station, so you need to stay on the formed track.

The hardest segment is the final push toward the 1,748 m summit, where the route becomes more exposed and rough. There are steep drop-offs on the way to the summit, and snow or ice can make the track notably more treacherous.

If you’re aiming to build fitness without committing to the full summit effort, there’s a well-supported alternative: go to Ben Lomond Saddle only. The satellite options also include riding the gondola partway up and hiking from the Skyline complex to the saddle and back.

Season and conditions matter a lot on this track. Winter and cold months can require alpine equipment and capability (including avalanche-related gear plus crampons and an ice axe), and the weather can shift rapidly, bringing risks like hypothermia even in warmer months.

The Ben Lomond area above Queenstown (including Ben Lomond) sits in a year-round high fire risk zone with an outdoor fire ban. The track may also change between slippery muddy sections and very slippery ground, and steep downhill mountain bike tracks intersect the walking route, making signed walker-only navigation important.

Plan for limited infrastructure: pack enough water because there is no water past the Skyline Gondola complex. Toilets are available at the Skyline Gondola top complex and there is also a toilet about 100 m before Ben Lomond saddle; bring your own supplies and carry out your rubbish.
