Middle Alamo Trail
Middle Alamo Trail is a long-distance hiking route in Bandelier National Monument, built for getting off the most-used paths and reaching the Alamo Canyon area. The route’s through-line links mesa-top hiking with remote canyon terrain.
Expect a strenuous hike profile with steep descents and climbs, plus sections that can be uneven and rocky. Even when you’re moving efficiently, plan for more time than you would on a typical marked loop because the effort is concentrated in the elevation changes and footing.
Distance varies by how you run it: about 12.6 miles out-and-back on the core Middle Alamo Trail, or about 15.3 miles as a loop when you combine it with Upper Alamo and Frijoles Rim trails. Elevation gain is roughly in the 1,921–2,785 ft range depending on your exact combination of segments.
The trail provides access to major cultural features in the backcountry, including the Yapashi Pueblo ruins and the Shrine of the Stone Lions. This is one of the reasons many hikers choose Middle Alamo—history is encountered after you’ve committed to the longer, harder approach into the canyon country.
In the Alamo Canyon area, the landscape follows a canyon-and-rim character: ponderosa pines and junipers show up along the route, with canyon walls shaping where the trail runs and how exposed you can feel on the open stretches.
Route pacing and spacing matters. Some sections include more exposed sunny hiking as the route works through higher-elevation meadows and rim terrain, so bring enough water for sustained effort and plan for sun management.
If you want an all-day trek, Middle Alamo is commonly linked with Frijoles Rim to make a full-day loop around 15 miles with significant climbing. If you want a simpler turnaround day, the Middle Alamo out-and-back format keeps the logistics more straightforward.
Bandelier’s trail environment can include areas affected by prior fires, so expect that some stretches may feel visually stark or more rugged than heavily trafficked corridors. For planning, also note that parts of the monument can close temporarily due to erosion or wildfire burn impacts, so check current park alerts before committing.
